剧情简介

   改革开放初期，优先发展的广东一带是内陆许多省市年轻人眼中的天堂，北方某省名叫赵家坳的小山村就有赵小云（陈小艺）、志强等六名青年男女怀着梦想来到广东，他们希望通过打工改变自己的命运。其时纺织、玩具制造等产业是广东的发展支柱，心细手快的打工妹远比笨手拙脚的打工仔吃香。
   其中四个姑娘经老乡凤珍介绍进了康乐厂，成了外来妹，“青年突击手”志强和金贵却被挡在门外，几天后依然未能找到工作，金贵选择回家，而志强给别人放鸭子。
   工厂里，笨拙的“靓女”总是出差错，被“炒鱿鱼”，竞而轻生，被人们救起；聪明的小云，由于技术好，从开始被任命为拉长助理到后来的拉长，而后又到江生的建达厂当生产主管，最后为乡政府自办工厂担任厂长。
外面的生活很精彩却也是残酷的，外来妹们在磨难中逐渐成熟起来，各自选择了自己的路。
  “靓女”终因伤残而回到了山里；秀英为了钱而堕落了；玉兰与当地小食店的老板福生结了婚；而回到山里结婚再也不准备外出打工的秀珍，却发现自己已不属于这里了，她又带出了一帮小姐妹。
   小云被当地乡政府任命为乡里第一间乡办玩具厂的厂长。开始了她新的生活和新的事业。赵家坳的姑娘们走出了山坳，走向了现代，还将往哪走?
