      38集电视剧版《唐山大地震》改编自华裔女作家张翎的中篇小说《余震》，由知名导演姚晓峰执导。该剧总监制华谊兄弟总裁王中磊，集结了陈小艺、张国立、张涵予、许亚军等著名老戏骨及佟丽娅、袁文康、朱铁等青年演员。这个故事讲述了一对在地震中被分开的母女，32年后意外的重逢再一次勾起了大家痛苦的回忆。小说曾经被冯小刚搬上大屏幕并感动了无数观众。剧情方面，编剧霍昕表示 “电视剧版将非常完整地呈现原著的故事情节，并将电影版中的精华部分加入进去。”方登的情感经历、加拿大的婚姻生活等等在电视剧中都得以延续和发展。
       除了剧情的突破完善之外，演员方面也是融入了众多新生代偶像与实力派演员。华谊兄弟透露，筹备两年之久的电视剧版《唐山大地震》，于2011年10月在京正式开机。
      本剧于2011年10月在北京正式开机拍摄。根据新闻报导，“相对于电影版，电视剧版《唐山大地震》在某些方面更加忠实原著小说《余震》，如还原小说中人物的姓名，将“方”改为“万”。在剧情上，电视剧版将完整呈现原著的故事情节，详细讲述李元妮、万达母子与女儿万登震后32年的生命轨迹，并呈现了李元妮和万大成，董桂兰和王德清，李元妮和小林以及万登和杨阳四组家庭的悲欢离合 。”
